Happy Literacy Day! We had a lot of children come in costume today: pirates, dragon, wizards, unicorn-fairy, Santa, Fancy Nancy, Hello Kitty, Tom Sawyer, Little Red Riding Hood, and many more characters! We had exploration time this morning, followed by our welcome song and a group photo of costumes. After snack and outdoor play, we came in for Brain Gym, Morning Message and Calendar. We then visited the library and talked about Owls. We had the chance to watch a live feed of owls in a nest! This was really neat. After, we exchanged books and then had a story. After lunch and outdoor play, we came in for Montre et Racontre and then a visit from Paul et Suzanne. After quiet literacy choice time, we did a Carnaval Art activity. We all talked about the colours of Carnaval, and Bonhomme's colours. We then did a pastel colouring of his head to help decorate the gym for our Carnaval Celebration. We then visited the music room for music class.

We started our day off with morning exploration. Some of us worked on tracing and cutting out our mittens. We then had our welcome song and practiced saying our first and last names. After snack and outdoor playtime, we came in for Brain Gym, Calendar and some singing. We then watched a couple of short video clips about 'Carnaval' that is celebrated in Quebec. We will be celebrating Carnaval at school next Friday, Feb 6th. We learned about Bonhomme, the big snowman mascot and the different activities that take place during Carnaval. We also learned a song about Bonhomme and the different musical instruments he plays. We then went to the gym for some cooperative games and stations to rotate through. After lunch, we visited the music class. We then came back for Show and Tell, a visit from Paul et Suzanne and quiet literacy choice time. After, we did some more French singing before free exploration time. We ended the day celebrating one of the children's birthdays.
*Reminder that tomorrow is Literacy Character Dress up day, must be someone from a book. *Library day tomorrow Here are some videos about Carnaval: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bz48tSD6AR8 http://carnaval.qc.ca/en/video/2014-quebec-winter-carnival-mission-accomplished/ This morning we started with morning exploration. We had a guest visitor, Mr. G, who did some building with some of us in the block area. Some of us worked on tracing and cutting out big mittens. After, Mr. G taught us a French song, Alouette (larch). He played it on his guitar. He also let us all have a turn strumming, ask questions and he played a few different tunes for us to sing and dance along. This was very exciting. After outdoor play and snack, we came in for Brain Gym and a new activity we will be adding on to this time everyday: Morning Message. Madame had left us a message on the board. We worked together to underline words we knew and then letters too. We worked on reading the message together. We noticed that the spaces let us know when a word is starting or ending. To go along with our snowflake and winter theme, we then watched the video of the song 'do you want to build a snowman' from Frozen in French!!! We paused and talked about vocabulary it was great! A lot of fun to follow a song we already know in French and be able to relate what is going on by hearing words we already understand and use in French. We then when and visited the computer lab with Mme Sunny. We came back for Calendar and some rhymes and letter chants. After lunch and outdoor play, we had a visit from Paul et Suzanne. We then had quiet literacy choice time. The next hour was spent rotation through six different hands on math play stations. We had...
-Rolling a die and having to print the number on a mini whiteboard -Picking a number card and then creating the ten frame visual of that number using counter objects -Making numbers and ten frame pieces out of playdough -Patterning using wooden blocks and mini tree pieces -Patterning using translucent blocks on the light table -Using shapes to create designs and patterns on the light table. I am so impressed with these children, they were engaged and enjoying the stations for an hour! This was fantastic! We did about 10 minutes in each station, and then rotated through all of them working in groups of 3 friends. We ended the day with the 'Let it go' video in French, 'Liberer' ...very fun once again to hear a well known song, follow along with the video in French! here is the link to the French frozen songs on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQP9XZc2Y_c https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3QAXFudxqRM We started off our day with morning exploration time. We are excited that we are setting up our salmon tank for our salmon eggs that will be arriving sometime this week. We have talked about the set up of the tank, the filter, the rocks, the gravel and the oyster shells. We have also talked about how we have to clean the tank and the instruments before the eggs arrive. We have talked about how the water must be chilled, and looked at the parts of the tank that chills down the water. After snack and outdoor play, we came in for Brain Gym and Calendar. We then went to the gym with Mme Sunny. We came back for a story before lunch. After lunch, we had show and tell and then a visit from Pat le chat and his book. These are the Pete Cat books in French. Great books! We then had our quiet literacy choice time. We then did a drama activity to help us with the retelling of the mitten story and all the characters. We worked today on cutting out all the animals and we will be attaching them on popsicle sticks to be used as an aid to retell the story. We are working on learning all the animals names in French, this is challenging because some are not common domestic animals. We had some quiet exploration time: puzzles, lacing, book look at the end of the day. We are working on using imessages right now when feeling upset, and lots of us are still needing help to talk through problems and reminders to use these messages.
We started off our day with morning exploration. We then went had our welcome song and learned a new song using the word 'salut', which is similar to saying 'hey' in English. After snack and outdoor playtime, we came in for Brain Gym, we then did some independent work on printing our first names with an upper case letter to start, followed by lowercase letters. This is still quite tricky for some of us! We are working towards meeting our goal of being able to print our names like this this term. We then visited the library and listened to a French story about les animaux who went in to a dog's kennel for dinner! It was funny. We then exchanged our books. We came back for Calendar and some singing in French and dancing. After lunch, we had show and tell. We then reread our mitten story and talked about the order that the animals climb in the mitten. We were excited to see two GIANT mittens taped out on our carpet. We each had the chance to act out a different animal as the story went on, and we each climbed in the giant mitten. Then at the end, when the little mouse climbs in, it tickles the bear's nose and the bear SNEEZES! Everyone jumped out! We did the ending twice because it was so much fun. We then coloured in le herisson, the next animal in our story. Next, we had our quiet literacy choice time. We then practiced singing a new song that we are learning. We ended our day with our music class.
We started off our day with morning exploration and some of us used glue, salt and water colour to make snowflakes on paper. We then watched a really neat video that is showing snowflakes really close up. Here is the link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jiuaxPETk_k After recess, we did some brain gym and then had a special visit from Ms. McPhee. Ms. McPhee has been working hard to create a sensory bin to help us to learn about self-regulation. Ms. McPhee came with a lesson all about self-regulation. We talked about feeling upset, mad, frustrated, embarrassed. We talked about that it is okay to feel angry or upset, but the important part is how we deal with it. Remembering to use I-messages when talking with each other to express how YOU are feeling. For example: I feel sad when you push me in line. It helps the person know how YOU are feeling, and what they need to not do. We made a bull's eye of things that make us upset or mad or frustrated. We then went to the gym for some movement activites and cooperative games with all our kindergarten friends. After lunch, we came in for Show and Tell et Paul et Suzanne. We then had quiet literacy choice time. This morning we began with morning exploration. We then had a video presentation that one of our children had worked on with Mme Rebecca. Everyone will have the chance to create a short puppet video in the next couple of months. We then had snack and outdoor play. After recess we did Brain Gym and Calendar. We then did some alphabet rhymes and singing and we did some singing and dancing about winter. Then, we visited Mme Sunny in the gym. When we came back, we listened to a winter story. After lunch, we had show and tell and listened to Pat le chat. We had quiet literacy choice time before listening to Paul et Suzanne. We then practiced writing and tracing our names using an uppercase letter to start followed by lowercase letters. This is our goal for this term! We then had free exploration play time, followed by a bit of dancing and singing.
We started off our day with exploration time. Lots of us were busy beading pipe cleaner snowflakes. We then had our welcome song. After snack and outdoor play, we came in for Brain Gym and Calendar. We then did some alphabet singing and rhymes. Next, we visited the library. We listened to a French book about all the things we do in the library. We then had the chance to pick out a new book. After, we came back and we listened to a short story about what animals do when snowflakes begin to fall. We had many ideas of what they do, and learned that some fly south, others make nests, some hibernate and some are happy in the snow because of their warm coats and fur. We talked about what kinds of things humans do in the snow, and we would probably do. Some of us would....
-Go to mexico! -Build a snowman -Make a snow fort -Build a fort inside and watch a movie -Drink warm hot chocolate -Try to eat some snow We worked on drawing what we would like to do when snowflakes fall. After lunch, we came in for show and tell and then had literacy choice time. After, we learned a new French song about "Hiver" (winter), the song was talking about what it would be like if it snowed. We then made a list of things we wear in the winter. We drew ourselves in some of these clothing items in our portfolio books and practiced writing 'janvier' (January). We are working on practicing with lower case letters. We then went to music class with Ms. Shum. Welcome back to everyone! I hope you all enjoyed your holidays and were healthy creating memories with you children. We spent the first part of our morning sharing stories, talking about activities and presents and playing. We then had our welcome song. After snack and indoor recess (yoga break), we did Brain Gym and Calendar. We then did some singing and letter rhymes. We did a brainstorm about what we know about Snowflakes, we had a lot of facts and ideas about what we know about snowflakes. The question then came up about how are snowflakes made? Lots of our friends thought they came from the sky, from clouds that were filled with water. Then the water came as rain, and got cold and turned to snow. These children are amazing! I then asked, how does the water get up to the clouds....we had MANY different ideas. I asked them to draw me how they thought water got back up to the clouds. Here are some of our ideas: buckets on a system, tubes that come down and suck up the water (very popular), that water can fly, wind blows water up to the clouds, water is magic... and the list goes on. We headed to the gym for some stations working on balance, movement, aim and catching. We also played a couple of cooperative team games. After lunch and indoor recess, we had a Pat le Chat story and literacy choice time. We then learned how to draw a snowflake, and talked about how they are similar to patterns. We did an art crayon resist, painting snowflake activity and finished our day with exploration play time.
