I am so sorry for the lack of updates lately. Fresh Grade has been going so well, and I have been so busy uploading all of your children's wonderful progress, learning and celebrations. It is such an exciting time to share all of our learning with you.
We have been busy with our force and motion inquiry. It has led us to more research about simple machines, bridges, and ramps. Some of our friends have been bringing in drawings and books that relate to our topic, this is always my favourite! It is neat that SO many of our friends have been creating and building things and then noticing and showing others where the ramps, levers and pulleys are! How neat. The children have decided a simple machine they would like to become an expert in. We have about 4-5 friends in each group.
Lever
Ramp
Pulley
Screw (shape)
Wheel
The groups have done some brainstorming and research. They have drawn many examples of their simple machine and created mini posters with their work. They now have come up with something they would like to create to represent their simple machine. They did a bit of research to find a design idea and image. They then worked together to draw plans for their design. We then did a small group meeting with Mme Rebecca to come up with the required materials they will be needing to create their design.
The lever group is going to be creating a mini teeter totter for toys.
The ramp group is making a marble run out of tubes and then the marble hits over some dominoes.
The pulley group is going to create a pulley system that uses a cup and rope to transport objects.
The screw group decided to create something using the shape of the screw and incorporate the ramp into their design. They are going to make a mini water slide.
The wheel group are going to be designing little cars and trucks.
We will be working on our creations this week! I have booked for our class to use the Maker Space all afternoon on Friday to complete our projects. I am excited to be exploring and supporting learners up in the Maker Space for the first time too! Usually our Maker Space time is with Mme Sunny.
We have been working on a lot of number and letter recognition through singing, poems, and hands-on activities. We have been practicing some of our numbers (1-10) and letters in French. A lot of our letter recognition is happening through our simple machine inquiry, as we are beginning to label some pictures with a title or initial word sounds.
A big focus for us over the past while has been our emotions. We have been talking a lot about our different feelings, how they can change due to something or someone. We have been comparing our feelings to Baby Adelyn and doing a lot of discussions on how we can soothe her and sooth ourselves and friends to feel better. It is great to hear most of the children coming in each morning and saying how they are feeling. Some are even now adding in emotions, instead of just a general thumbs up or thumbs down (Ca va bien or ca va mal).
