We started off our day with morning exploration. Mme Rebecca is currently working with each child to see what alphabet letters they know. We then had our welcome song, set up our daily schedule and talked about our day. After snack and outdoor play, we came in for Brain Gym and Calendar. We then focused on talking about the letter A. We practiced drawing A and a on the mini whiteboards. We did a little bit of singing before heading off to the gym. We went to the gym with some other kindergarten friends for moving and stopping games. After lunch and outdoor play, we went to music class. When we returned we had a visit from Paul et Suzanne and had our quiet time. We ended our day with free outdoor exploration time.

We started off our day with morning exploration. We were so lucky that one of our friends brought in a snail this morning. We were so excited observing the snail. We named it and drew it. We asked lots of questions and discussed about the snail. How wonderful. After snack and outdoor recess time, we came in for a special visit from Firefighter Taylor. We learned about his role at the fire station, what outfit he wears when fighting fires, heard lots of stories and asked lots of questions. This was so exciting for us, since we have been brainstorming and reading different Fire/fire station/firefighter stories lately. Firefigher Taylor let us try on his jacket and helmet. He also brought us a hat, pencil and colouring book. Thank you! We then drew in our journals about one thing we learned from Firefighter Taylor, whilst wearing our firefighter hats of course! After lunch and recess break, we came in for a visit from Paul et Suzanne, had our quiet time and then did free exploration time until our music class.
We have decided to make a home terrarium for 'Rainbow' our snail (escargot). We will be starting this on Monday. How exciting! Here is an overview of our morning today:
We started our day with a visit to the maker space room, we even had a chance to work on letter practice on the iPads. We then returned and had our morning meeting, we got a chance to see each family's picture from the BBQ night. After recess, and outdoor playtime we came in for Brain Gym, Question of the Day and Calendar. We are learning the days of the week and months of the year in French. Our question today, for our graph, was "Aimes-tu chanter?" "Do you like to sing?". The children put up their name under the column to show if YES, NO, or NOT SURE is their answer. Next, we learned that Mme Breton and Bebe Ellie (baby Ellie) were coming to visit us this afternoon. We practiced a welcome song for Bebe Ellie and came up with different questions we have for Mme Breton about her daughter, Bebe Ellie. Some of our questions for Mme Breton are: "Can she chew yet?" "Can she draw and write yet?" "Can she spell her name?" "Can she chew food?" "Can she crawl yet?" "Can Bebe Ellie joue (play)?" "Does bebe ellie have teeth yet?" "Can bebe Ellie marche (walk)?" We then estimated how big Bebe Ellie was going to be. Mme Rebecca took a photo of each child with their estimation shown with their hands for Ellie's size. We then went to the gym with some other kindergarten friends. We had a chance to play with the parachute. We worked through different games and had a lot of fun! This afternoon Bebe Ellie came, we were so excited to see her, touch her feet to shake with her and sing to her. Bebe Ellie was crawling and trying to eat her shoes! We then had our quiet time where we drew, read and relaxed. Next we had our free exploration time and everyone had a chance to do an observational art drawing with pastels and then water colour of the sunflowers. We started our day with exploration play time. Lots of us chose to help decorate wooden letters with found objects, others helped create the months and days of the week for our calendar. After snack and outdoor play, we came in for Brain Gym and we learned our 'Question of the Day' routine. We practiced answering the question, and placing our name in the column of our answer. We then continued on to practicing printing our names. We then did some movement to French songs with scarves. After we learned that a firefighter will be visiting us on Friday. So we came up with questions and wonders to ask him. We then drew in our journals what we think the firefighter will look like. How exciting! After lunch and an outdoor play, we went to the French Grade 1 room for a partner quiet book look and then we all read together Paul et Suzanne. We returned to our classroom after for a free exploration time. Mme Rebecca worked with each child to answer a few interview questions and then a small group worked on creating a number chart for our room.
Reminders: *Please send package of forms back asap *Family Meet the Teacher BBQ tomorrow at 5pm (Wednesday). Come straight to the classroom. Yesterday was a great day, we even drew in our special portfolio books. We drew ourselves in September. This is a book we will do different jobs in each month. In the afternoon we worked on self-portraits to decorate our walls.
This morning we started off our day in Mme Goulet's room for the first part to share a book with a grade 1 friend, we even all went to the gym together. After recess, we returned to our class for a snack, book look and then some brain gym movements. We worked individually to practice printing our names. After we did a dancing activity to a few different French songs. After lunch and an outdoor break we came in for Paul et Suzanne (story and puppets) and our quiet relaxing time. We then moved right into exploration play time, some of us did a gluing and pasting art activity. We then cleaned up and headed to the music class for our music time. Have a great weekend! First week was great! *Reminder: No school for students on Monday (staff have a pro-d day) *Family Meet the Teacher BBQ on Wednesday at 5pm in the classroom We are on our way to learning our routines. We started off our day with exploration time. We each practiced writing our names with Mme Rebecca during this time. We then had snack and recess time. We came in for Brain Gym movements and a story. We then went to our first Music Class in the music room with Ms. Shum. This was very exciting. Next, we returned to class and talked about what it means to be kind to others. We watched a quick video clip about how acts of kindness can make others feel happy. We then brainstormed different acts of kindness we can do around our classroom and in our lives to help others feel happy and loved. We shared many great ideas.
Here is the youtube link to the video clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwelE8yyY0U After lunch and outdoor playtime, we came in for Paul et Suzanne. We were quickly interrupted with a fire alarm and a quick exit to the field. We agreed after that the alarm is a very loud piercing sound, and it is best to cover our ears while lining up and quickly exiting the building. This was a great practice, but unfortunately it was not scheduled. A student (not from our class) pulled the alarm alarm. We talked about the seriousness of a fire drill and what our jobs are whilst exiting the building. Everyone was a bit nervous, but did a great job! I was so impressed. We even found a few Fire fighter books around the classroom. We have so many ideas, questions and thoughts about fires, fire fighters, fire trucks, fire stations. We will be talking some more about this tomorrow...this might be our first topic of inquiry and learning this school year! We shall see where our questions, wonders and thoughts take us. We then finished off Paul et Suzanne and had our quiet time. We continued to have exploration playtime, some of us started on Sharpie self-portraits to decorate our classroom walls. *BBQ forms came home today. Please return to classroom or office asap. Today we had a similar day to yesterday to clarify and practice our new routines that we are using. Today was a smoother day than yesterday! Great job to everyone.
We started off our day with an exploration play time. We then met on the carpet for our welcome morning song, talked about our day plan and greeted our friends. Next, we share our passions. We talked about things we love and are good at. We all shared one of our favourite passions, something we love or love to do. Mme Rebecca will be posting this in the classroom to celebrate us! After snack and an outdoor play with all of our kindergarten friends we came in for a story and brain gym movements to music. We read a story about using our words when we are feeling upset. After lunch and outdoor playtime, we came in for a visit from our friends Paul et Suzanne. They asked us questions in French, and we did our best to respond! We then had a quiet time. Some of us chose to colour, others chose to read a book and others chose to relax. We had an exploration play time at the end of our day. Thanks for a great day everyone!! We are learning to: -Line up -Walk in the Hallway -Open and close our backpacks, containers and lunch kits We are remembering to: -Use our words when feeling sad, mad or frustrated -Keep our hands to ourselves -Listen to Madame Rebecca and each other In French we are: -Singing good morning and good bye songs -Learning about body parts -Learning routine phrases -Speaking with Paul et Suzanne (our French friend puppets) We started off our day with a book look and colouring time to settle in. We then met at the carpet for a welcome, our Bonjour Song, and we did a special rock activity. We each picked a special rock that will be ours for the year. We learned that this rock will help us 'sign in' each morning. Madame Rebecca taught us how to have our rocks listen to our hearts and dreams, and then we listened to our rock's hearts and dreams. This was very special. After snack and outdoor play time, we came in and listened to the 'Kissing Hand' story again, we are now experts on how to feel loved and safe at school. Next we did some Brain Gym moving to music. After lunch and our outdoor break, we came in and met two very special friends: Paul et Suzanne. We learned that Paul and Suzanne will be visiting us each day after lunch to help us learn more in French and share a story. (Paul and Suzanne are puppets). We then had a quiet relaxing time where we had a choice to read a book, relax on the carpet or colour... all whilst listening to Enya! We then talked about playtime expectations, and had free choice exploration time. We played: in the kitchen, at the light table, with the big blocks and cars, at the doll house nature center, with the small blocks, at the math table, creating with beads, and at the writing center. We cleaned up and met on the carpet to learn our goodbye song to end our day. What a busy, but great, first day in Kindergarten at George Jay.

This is our learning blog for our Kindergarten year together. Here you will find class updates, news and reminders. Please share your comments and thoughts on our different posts. We look forward to communicating with you through our blog. This can be a great tool/prompt for talking and reviewing the school day with your child. Enjoy! We started off our day off with butterfly anticipation, colouring and exploration time. Our butterflies, well caterpillar,s will arrive tomorrow, we hope! We then had journal writing time about our long weekends after outdoor play and snack. We also worked on designing and creating a school with sponges, prints and paint. They are now displayed on our bulletin board. We hope you enjoy! We then had gym time. After lunch, we came in for show and tell and a visit from Paul et Suzanne. We then had literacy choice time. After, we talked about earthquakes, and the recent earth quake in Nepal. We looked a neat kids site all about quakes and shakes. We saw some pictures of buildings in Nepal, that had slid and tilted over. (Nothing major or graphic was shown) We then did a brainstorm about how we work to prepare ourselves for earthquakes. We talked about practicing, exiting the building when safe, staying with the group. Someone brought up that we need a kit. So we brainstormed what would go in an earthquake kit. We then watched a short video of how to make your own earthquake kit at home. We decided it would be neat if we made a quick video to let people know how to make an earthquake kit. We worked together to plan and make a video of how to be prepared for an earthquake. This video will be shared when we share about our whole inquiry project.
We had time for outdoor play at the end of the day. |
