We had time for outdoor play at the end of the day.
We started off our day off with butterfly anticipation, colouring and exploration time. Our butterflies, well caterpillar,s will arrive tomorrow, we hope! We then had journal writing time about our long weekends after outdoor play and snack. We also worked on designing and creating a school with sponges, prints and paint. They are now displayed on our bulletin board. We hope you enjoy! We then had gym time. After lunch, we came in for show and tell and a visit from Paul et Suzanne. We then had literacy choice time. After, we talked about earthquakes, and the recent earth quake in Nepal. We looked a neat kids site all about quakes and shakes. We saw some pictures of buildings in Nepal, that had slid and tilted over. (Nothing major or graphic was shown) We then did a brainstorm about how we work to prepare ourselves for earthquakes. We talked about practicing, exiting the building when safe, staying with the group. Someone brought up that we need a kit. So we brainstormed what would go in an earthquake kit. We then watched a short video of how to make your own earthquake kit at home. We decided it would be neat if we made a quick video to let people know how to make an earthquake kit. We worked together to plan and make a video of how to be prepared for an earthquake. This video will be shared when we share about our whole inquiry project.

We have had a fabulous last week at school working on our George Jay Inquiry Project. Last Friday we were fortunate to have Cruz's father come in to talk to us about his construction job. The children were fascinated with his safety gear, tool belt and stories of sky high buildings, houses and much more. They had an endless supply of questions. Merci! We then had Christian's parents come and talk to us about roofing. Christian's father did a roofing demonstration right here in the classroom and shingled a mini roof for us. This was very exciting, merci! Next, we had Amelia and Alyse's mother come and do an interior design activity. Ann brought samples on samples on samples for floors, tiles, fabric and wallpaper. The children were challenged to think of something they would like to design. Some chose ballrooms, pools, jails, houses and the list goes on. They then had to pick out tiles, fabric, floors, etc. to go in their room and draw a design plan. We made them each a design folder with their samples and plans. Wow! Merci!
Our inquiry focus groups have been very busy this week as well. Posters, displays, stop motion videos, adobe voice videos that explain their learning process and art pieces have been created. These children are so engaged in their learning it is incredible! They have decided to have a learning exhibit similar to a market where they get to run their table and share about their learning. Wow! Yesterday, we went on a beautiful flower and shape walk around the community. We searched for different types of flowers, colours and trees. We also looked for shapes on houses to tie in with our building portion of our inquiry project. What an busy day! We started off with class pictures. We then had an earthquake simulator building school challenge to go along with our George Jay seismic upgrade inquiry. Children worked in partners to build a school and then we times how long it would last in an earthquake (on the mini trampoline)! We then had gym with our kindergarten friends. After lunch we walked to the forest for outdoor exploration time. We then came back and had a special visit from one of our dads who works in construction as a builder. We learned so much about his role as a builder. This will help us with our inquiry project. It was so neat to see all his safety gear and tools. Thank you!! What a special talk fornthe children to be part of. We have been busy creating an art project for a special celebration later on this week. We have been busy learning and building schools and exploring outdoors with the ipads in nature.
Yesterday we had a busy day. We started off with morning exploration time. After snack and outdoor play, we came in for a special activity with Mme Sunny in our classroom. Mme Sunny has recently introduced us to 'Sheldon the Sphero'. Sheldon is a ball that is controlled by an app on the iPad. Yes, our five and six year olds are learning to CODE. This is a great introduction to robotics and coding for young children. The children have had the chance to each move and control Sheldon and use the iPad as a remote. Yesterday, we challenged them to create pathways, mazes, ramps and tunnels for Sheldon to go through. There was so much problem solving, discussions, building and rebuilding going on. Our room was buzzing with creativity and excitement. Here is a link if you would like to know more about Sphero balls: http://www.gosphero.com/education/ We had gym with our kindergarten friends were we practiced balancing, throwing, catching, weaving, guiding using hockey sticks and cooperative teamwork. After lunch, we had time for a story and some literacy choice time. We then worked on our George Jay School Inquiry Project. Children are busy designing schools out of cardboard and Styrofoam, making a clay bird's eye view of the school floor plan, drawing up plans to make a mini digger, creating parts of the playground which they plan on using in Puppet Pals to make a short presentation, and much more! We then walked to the spirit garden and had free exploration time. Some children did the journals on the ipads by taking photographs and using invented spelling to write. Today we had morning exploration time, and then we joined Ms. Moore's class for some singing. We then had outdoor play and snack time. After we came in for Calendar. We then did some journaling and surprised Mrs. McPhee with a special Journal birthday presentation. We all wrote in our journals for her and Mme Rebecca put our work into a short slideshow video. She was so happy and said that it made her Birthday so very special. We then went outside for some exploration time in the meadow. After lunch, we had literacy choice time, a story and show and tell. We had some children practice their reading in French. We then had a group discussion about appropriate language to use at school (ie, no bathroom talk) and keeping our hands to ourselves (not hitting others, especially on private parts) and that in the bathrooms we must respect others' privacy. We then visited the music class for our final Aboriginal Drumming workshop. *Tomorrow is library day and children are invited to bring 25 cents to purchase popcorn as a fundraiser for Nepal. |
